Today, I formally assigned the Transcendental school essay. The assignment sheet and outline can be picked up from me in the classroom. Homework tonight is to complete the first page of the outline, which means writing a thesis statement similar to the one modeled in-class and outlining the first body paragraph of the essay.
We started today with an extended journal write about what your ideal school would look like. We followed that up with a brainstorming activity about the ideal Transcendental school. These ideas will become relevant tomorrow when we begin our Transcendental school essay. There is no homework assigned for this evening.

Discuss/finish Thoreau's "Resistance to Civil Government"
Assign Civil Disobedience Research paper -- Due Friday, February 17th
I have to be out of the classroom today, so a guest teacher will be taking you through the first half of Thoreau's "Resistance to Civil Government". Please follow the steps below to be prepared for Friday's class.
If your name is left by the substitute teacher indicating that you were a distraction today, you will forfeit the extra credit that I offered for last Friday's vocabulary quiz.
1.) Read the information on the slide that gives the background to Thoreau's act of civil disobedience. Then, write for ten minutes in your journal on the prompt that follows.
2.) Listen to the audio recording of the essay. Please follow along in your packet and annotate as you listen.
3.) Your homework tonight is to write a log on the portion of "Resistance to Civil Government" that you listened to in class today. You must complete this log even if you don't finish listening to the essay in-class. You are only responsible for responding to the portions of the essay that you listen to today during class.
4.) If you have questions, please feel free to send me an email.
